Letter from Celina Miranda on the Current Political Climate

Posted by Jessica Guzman in Blog with No Comments

Dear Friend:

We find ourselves in unstable and astounding times. Like many of you, we at Hyde Square Task Force are very concerned about the current political climate and the future of our country. Our worst fears are being realized. Each day we anxiously await the latest news, wondering who will be the next victim and what type of global chaos might be ignited.

Despite this, we are heartened by the mobilization and uplifting dissent we’ve witnessed locally and across the world against hate, xenophobia, racism, discrimination, and misogyny. Clearly, we are at a pivotal point in history, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. The grassroots values of diversity, inclusiveness, generosity, honesty and openness – upon which our immigrant nation was and is built – are in danger.

HSTF will continue to be a safe haven for our youth and their families, many of whom are impacted by recent events. We also see this as a unique historic opportunity, and we are energized to take on the challenge. Many of our staff, youth, board members, and constituents have attended rallies, marched in the streets, and spoken out in their schools and communities. And we will continue to do so with vigor and determination.

Since our founding 25 years ago, HSTF has consistently advocated for justice, demonstrating the positive contributions of immigrants to Boston’s social and economic fabric. For example, our recent campaign to have the Hyde-Jackson Square neighborhood designated as “Boston’s Latin Quarter” is an effort to recognize, uplift, and preserve the richness of Afro-Latin culture.

In the coming months, we must press on and continue this work on all fronts. Our collective power is our best tool for transformation. We encourage you to stay positive and dig in for the long haul. If you are available, please join us on Feb. 13th for our “Where is the Love?” rally (see details below).
