Campaign to End Sexual Harassment

Youth being interviewed about Sexual Harassment

A campaign which raises awareness of sexual harassment by encouraging young women and their allies to identify harassment, and take action in their community to stop it.

Sexual harassment is a serious issue in the Hyde/Jackson Square community. For years, girls affiliated with the Hyde Square Task Force have complained of the unwanted sexual advances-- including requests for sexual favors-- they face as they walk to the Hyde Square Task Force’s office on Centre Street. In 2004, HSTF youth decided to take action and raise awareness about this problem. The teens designed an information card reading “Please Treat Me with Respect,” in both English and Spanish. The bilingual card, which listed the offensive behaviors, was then handed to men on the street and displayed by local businesses.

At a press conference in 2005, the youth announced their Campaign to End Sexual Harassment, with a plan to educate their peers about harassment through workshops and dramatic performance. As the Campaign progressed, youth encountered sexual harassment not only on community streets, but in schools as well. In recent years, youth have expanded the Campaign to End Sexual Harassment to address this issue in Boston Public Schools. To learn more about these efforts, click here.
