Michael stumbled on Hyde Square Task Force after trouble in school and with the law.  Through Music Clubhouse and a leadership program he is working hard to develop leadership and literacy skills, and expressing his desire to do something better with his life.

Saying No to Big Tobacco

Youth from Hyde Square Task Force teamed up with youth from Cacique Youth Learning Center for a talent show to highlight their aim to limit the sale of flavored tobacco and the visibility of tobacco products in stores.  In addition to the talent acts, youth brought around petitions asking attendees to support their cause.

Jamaica Plain School Students Demand Sex Education

Conversations on youth community change key in wake of violence

In the wake of a triple homicide at Same Old Place in Jamaica Plain, Claudio urges citizens to ensure safety and justice for all people, with increased focus on helping young people succeed.  He also announces the beginning of the “Changing Together” public dialogues.

Making it to Year 2

Success Boston, a program aimed at helping at-risk BPS students through college, increases the percentage of students who finish their first year of college and re-enroll for a second year to 85%.  Hyde Square Task Force is one of the organizations supported by Success Boston, where coaches support students through all aspects of the college process and college life.

Healthy How-To: How to start a conversation about making healthy choices

Youth Literacy Tutors from Hyde Square Task Force identified obesity as a problem in their community, and created a book for kids about making healthy choices.  The illustrated book follows the adventures of Scooter & Flippy—a  cheeseburger and a piece of broccoli—and includes recipes and activities.

Youths eye better MBTA relations

Youth organizers from the Hyde Square Task force surveyed 700 students who take the T on a regular basis, finding tension between youth and Transit Police.  The Task Force youth presented their findings, with suggestions for ways to improve relations, to the T Transit Police Chief during a press conference.

Teen Perseveres with help of Hyde Sq. Task Force

Young adult Maxiel Beltre seems to have her life all together, but has been through some tough struggles—her mom died of cancer when she was 14, leaving her without a caregiver or home in the United States.  With the help and support of Hyde Square Task Force, she now has a job and a plan, and looks forward to attending college.
