A Note from Our Directors
As 2007 draws to a close, all of us at HSTF would like to thank you for helping to make this year a successful and productive one. We have moved many of our programs into the 30,000 square feet Cheverus just steps away from our main office on Centre Street. The new space has allowed for the creation of a new dance sudio, a Music Clubhouse, and a computer lab to serve more youth than ever before! In 2008, HSTF will realize another dream, as construction on the long-awaited Jackson Square Youth and Family Center has gained city approval and is slated to begin in the fall. HSTF's youth leaders have been advocating for the Youth and Family Center -- part of a larger Jackson Square Redevelopment project -- since 1999 and the plans are based upon their vision. We at HSTF look forward to celebrating all our successes with you in the coming year, as we continue to build the skills of youth and the strength of our community.

Introducing: M.I.S.T.E.R.
Men in Search of Truth and Empowering Response (MISTER) is a discussion and personal development group for young men of the Hyde Square Task Force. MISTER began in the spring of 2007 as a way for these youth to develop an understanding of themselves and their role in the community, as well as within the organization. They strive to make themselves role models for others by supporting important causes, raising awareness about the many issues Black, Latino, and Asian youth face today, and finding meaningful and real solutions to these issues. MISTER participants pride themselves on becoming leaders at the Hyde Square Task Force and among their peers. Taking a leadership role for the first time as a group, MISTER will be hosting HSTF's annual Youth Holiday Party, to be held on December 21st. MISTER members will be responsible for preparing decorations, entertainment, and activities for all HSTF youth team members. To read more about MISTER, visit our website.
Kennedy Kids Learn Thru Dance
This year, 4th and 5th grade students at the Kennedy Elementary School continue to participate in Learn Thru Dance (LTD), HSTF's in-school and after-school dance and literacy program. Learn Thru Dance brings professional dance instructors into the classroom, where they teach Afro-Latin and contemporary dance combined with related literacy activities. This year, four classes will work with dance instructors Victor Perez and Burju Hurturk, one more than was taught the previous year. The after-school component of LTD will be run by HSTF alum and former Youth Literacy Tutor, Catherine Medina. In early February, LTD students will give their first performance, showcasing their new dance skills for parents, teachers, and classmates.

Spotlight on: Joshua Livingston, Boston University School of Social Work
Last year, BU School of Social Work student Joshua Livingston was placed as an intern with the Hyde Square Task Force. While working towards his Master's Degree in Macro Social Work with a concentration in Human Service Management, Josh was instrumental in helping to design and implement the Youth Entrepreneurship Clubs for Curley Middle School students. During his time at HSTF, Josh says, he gained experience in program planning and development, while making contacts in the community that he will use in the future. His year-long internship now complete, Josh has remained active in HSTF programming, returning as a volunteer to help facilitate our new young men's program, MISTER. Josh plans to continue working with youth development organizations in the future, and says his experience working with HSTF has inspired him to keep using his creativity to bring new youth programs to life.
