| Youth Bring Civics Campaign to City Hall
On Thursday, October 18th Hyde Square Task Force youth testified at Boston City Council's Hearing on Civics in Boston Public Schools. This hearing, initiated by HSTF Youth Community Organizers with the help of City Councilor Chuck Turner, explored the possibility of restoring a mandatory civics requirement for all Boston Public High School students. Over 200 youth and adults attended the hearing to show their support for a civics curriculum. Fifteen local organizations, including the Boston Parent Organizing Network and the Civic Education Project were represented at the hearing; many of these representatives also testified on behalf of the campaign for civics.

| HSTF Youth Get out the Vote
On Monday, October 15, all HSTF youth participated in a neighborhood voter registration initiative.Through the Coalition to Educate, Mobilize and Vote! (CEMV) a collaboration between the Hyde Square Task Force, City Life/Vida Urbana, and the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Council, young people canvassed Hyde/Jackson Square, knocking on doors and offering residents the opportunity to become registered voters. This effort comes in preparation for November elections, and encourages residents to take action on political issues that affect our community. CEMV has been operating for the past six years, and in 2006 alone helped to increase voter turnout in the Hyde/Jackson Square neighborhood by over thirty-five percent.

| A New Beginning in a New Space
September and October mark the beginning of all HSTF youth programming for the school year. Hyde Square Task Force youth programs serve hundreds of youth each year.To hold our growing programs, we have recently expanded into 4,000 square feet of community space in the Cheverus School, just steps from our main office on Centre Street. Renovations to create a dance studio, music practice space, and a fully equipped computer lab are well underway. The newly outfitted space will help us to reach up to 100 new youth this year. You can find directions to our new space and The Cheverus on our website at http://www.hydesquare.org/news_and_events/highlights.html. The Hyde Square Task Force is pleased to introduce our new Manager of Organizing and Policy Initiatives, Mark Pedulla. Mark comes to us with over eight years of organizing experience. He also has experience teaching and working with youth, in the Summer Explorations Program at Wellesley College and at the Northeastern Family Institute in Dorchester. Mark is excited to begin working with HSTF's Youth Community Organizers, and has been impressed by their level of political understanding and their commitment to creating change. When asked what he loves about organizing, Mark says it is the transformation that takes place in the lives of those of us who organize together, and the opportunity to create lasting change in the structure of our society. The Hyde Square Task Force is thrilled to have Mark as an addition to our team! For a full list of staff, please click here to visit our newly-updated staff page. |
