| Ritmo Heats up the White House!
|
"We
really can change lives for the better; when we teach and study the arts and
humanities," concluded First Lady Laura Bush after HSTF's own Ritmo en
Acción shook the White House January 28th with a rousing salsa and a
merengue so fast it would have left lesser dancers in the dust. The Ritmo youth won a prestigious Coming Up Taller Award from the President's Committee on Arts and the Humanities, the nation's highest honor for an out of school arts and humanities program. To read the full text of the JP Gazette article describing Ritmo's award, click here.
Ritmo
was celebrated during a reception at HSTF's Cheverus Building on February 1st,
which included the world premier of the Ritmo en Accion video (which you can view here.) On
February 11th at the Cloud
Foundation in Back Bay, the Massachusetts Cultural Council honored
Ritmo along with the other winner, The Barrington Stage Company, and two semi-finalists from
Massachusetts.

| Learn Thru Dance Shines at the Kennedy
|
As their
4-month Learn Thru Dance session
drew to a close, 4 fourth-grade classes exhibited their skills in a showcase
for the rest of their student body, school staff and their parents. Students
introduced each performance by sharing what they'd learned about the history
and origins of that dance style, including Reggaeton and the more traditional
Salsa, Merengue, Cha Cha Cha and Bachata. The show ended with a surprise
performance by instructors, Burju and Victor of HYM Dance Company, Boston's premier Latin
dance company. In February the 5th grade classes begin their own
session of LTD which will culminate at the end of the year with a showcase that
will be part of their graduation ceremonies.

Spotlight on: Anny Sanchez, Ritmo
en Acción Alumna |
| Anny Sanchez has a long history of involvement
with the Hyde Square Task Force. She was
introduced to the organization when her mother attended the ESL program HSTF
once offered and Anny took advantage of evening tutorial sessions as a middle
school student. When she began high
school, Anny became a Youth Literacy Tutor. At that time, a small group of
youth was just beginning to shape the Ritmo en Accion dance program. Anny volunteered to help out during her
sophomore year. When it came time to pick just one progam, she stuck with Ritmo
because it gave her the opportunity to continue to work with youth but also to
do the dance she loved. As a dancer,
Anny had the singular opportunity to travel to Paris with the Ritmo troupe and to perform
there. As a Ritmo instructor, she was
just as proud to watch groups of her students perform right here at home. During her junior year, she assisted in the
creation of our summer program's "Dance Camp," including working on the
business plans and proposals for the project. Anny continues on this path as she studies
Accounting in her second year at Stonehill
College. Now well on her way to becoming a CPA, she reflects
with great pride in her work with Ritmo and marvels at how it unexpectedly steered
her to her future career. |
