Hyde Square Task Force E-Update March 2006

The Hyde Square Task Force's "e-update" is a periodic electronic newsletter featuring the accomplishments of our programs and participants.  Our mission is to create a safe, clean and friendly neighborhood in Hyde/Jackson Square, a neighborhood that places its priority on young people. We strive to develop the skills of youth and their families so that they are empowered to enhance their own lives and build a stronger urban community. To learn more about us, please visit our website at  http://www.hydesquare.org/.

Highlights:

THANK YOU!  to all our individual donors who contributed nearly $7,000 during a 2005 year-end appeal.  More than 80 individuals made contributions ranging from $10 to $500 in support of our youth development programs.  Several donors also praised the work of our teens in their efforts to combat the sexual harassment that the girls and young women we work with face each day in the streets and even their schools.  Your contributions help sustain this work – and show our youth that they are not alone in working to make positive change in our community.

Learn about our teen Health Careers Ambassadors:  On October 24, 2005, the Hyde Square Task Force officially announced the beginning of the Health Careers Ambassadors Project, or H-CAP. Funded through a two-year grant from the Workforce Investment Act  (administered by Boston's Office for Jobs & Community Services), H-CAP aims to help youth explore different career opportunities within the health care industry. Local youth between the ages of 14 to 21 are placed in health care internships in which they gain hand-on experiences in a health care setting. Through their involvement with the program, the youth participate in job readiness trainings, job shadows of different health care professionals, and technical trainings to strengthen the skills needed to work in the health care field. Currently, H-CAP is in collaboration with Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, Brookside Community Health Center, Dimock Community Health Center, and Martha Eliot Community Health Center.

Check out our updated Youth Leadership CurriculumLast summer, Task Force teens and staff came together in a series of intensive meetings (guided by an experienced youth development consultant) to describe the many skills and competencies youth gain as participants of our youth leadership programs. The five competency levels described in our new Core Leadership Curriculum Handbook acknowledge the different level of skills of a teen new to our programs with one who has become a “Changemaker.”  Attainment of different levels of achievement are determined by youth self-evaluation and periodic review by each youth team's supersivor.

Meet our new staff:  In February the Task Force welcomed two new full-time staff:  Maanav Thakore is our new Community Organizer.  Together with Director of Community Development & Organizing Jesús Gerena, Maanav will be working with our Youth Community Organizers on issues ranging from sexual harassment to affordable housing.  Danielle Samalin is our new Development Manager.  She will be working with Director of Finance & Development Paul Trunnell and Program Developer Ken Tangvik to to raise money and publicize our accomplishments.
