Hyde Square's a Beach!
Have you had enough of the asphalt and concrete of the city?
Do you want to feel the sand beneath your feet, but can't get down to the Cape? Then swing by the Hyde Square Task Force for 'Beach Party,' the final event in our
Summer Nights Out series!
HSTF's Youth
Community Organizers are pulling out all of the stops for Beach Party-there will be a volleyball
tournament, sandcastle making, dance performances, music, refreshments, and a
whole lot of sand! The event will be held Thursday, August 14th from 5:30 - 8:00PM in the Cheverus parking lot at 365 Centre Street.
From bumping concerts and hot dance moves, to sports, games,
and voter registration, Summer Nights Out has been an enormous success!
Hundreds of youth and their families have come together to celebrate their
community through safe and positive summer activities. Our thanks go out to Mt. Washington Bank, the Boston Private Bank
and Trust Company, Boston Community Capital, Barry Dym, Wainwright Bank and
Trust, the First Parish
Church of Lincoln,
Bank of America,
and all those who helped make these events possible!

Red eyes, out of focus images of people without heads-there's
a lot more to photography than simply pointing and clicking. For six weeks this
summer, a small group of HSTF youth have been learning the basic technical and
compositional ins and outs of photography. The Youth Pix Project, led by accomplished photographer and volunteer Mark Saperstein, helps our youth look at their world
through a much different lens while honing valuable skills and enjoying
themselves.
Now, these youth are taking on the role of photographers at
many HSTF events! We would like to thank the Amelia Peabody Foundation and all those individuals who supported this
program.

Pix, contact Paul at 617.524.8303 x321 or via email at paul@hydesquare.org.

Mozart Gets a Makeover When you next visit Mozart Park, you may find yourself transported. Following the city's renovations, the mural needed to be repainted. HSTF's Community Development Artists took this opportunity to share their perspective of their community and to celebrate their own, unique cultures. The panaroma features an homage to the late giants of hip-hop, a tip of the hat to local legend Manuel 'Madego' DeBrand, a 'just for kids' section, and images capturing the passion of our youth for sports, theater, and nature. Under the guidance of professional muralist Roberto Chao, the CDAs expect to finish the mural by late next week.
These young artists are also nearing completion on a series of murals at Roxbury Crossing, a follow-up to the successful mural project they created at Jackson Square.

'Sofrito' Cooks at Bentances!
Each Tuesday afternoon, Israel Pabon, veteran Latin
percussionist and JP institution, jams with youth at the HSTF Music Clubhouse.
These Sofrito Sessions help bridge the
generation gap and offer our youth the chance to learn from some of the best
musicians around. Recently, Israel,
our youth drummers, and a couple of Ritmo reps laid down some beats at the
Bentances Youth Festival.
Click here to watch the youth in action.

Spotlight on:
Jazmin Bernabel, Summer Lead Teacher
|
After seven years of working with the Hyde Square Task
Force, Jazmin Bernabel is still not ready to say goodbye. Jazmin was a founding
member of the Ritmo en Acción dance troupe in 2001, helping shape the program
that would take HSTF youth to Paris and Washington
D.C. Two years later, she became
a Youth Community Organizer, planning events, organizing rallies, and pushing
for a new youth and family center in Jackson
Square. Since she graduated three years ago,
Jazmin has come back to guide the next generation of youth that come through
HSTF's doors for the Arts in the Summer
program.
"I love my job," says Jazmin. "This is what draws me home. I
want to be here, and I want to make sure that my fellow teachers truly want to
be here too." After four years, Jazmin's sense of ownership in this program is
quite reasonable. She's seen the summer program move from the Kennedy to the Curley School,
and finally into the Cheverus
Building behind 365
Centre.
Jazmin and the summer program teachers provide music, dance,
and art to dozens of young children in their community. "Some of the kids have
asked me if I'm coming back, and they say they'll only come back if I do. But
it works both ways. I come back for them too." Jazmin is entering her senior
year at Regis College, with hopes of working in child
psychology. She certainly has the experience to be a success.
