Don't miss this opportunity to join the staff of the Hyde Square Task Force, an award-winning youth community development organization based in the Hyde/Jackson Square neighborhood on the border between Jamaica Plain and Roxbury. A brand-new position, the Music Clubhouse Manager will have the unique opportunity to make a profound impact on the low-income, minority and immigrant community served by the Hyde Square Task Force as he/she helps to create the Hyde Square Task Force’s new instructional music program, the HSTF Music Clubhouse. Created through a partnership with the Music and Youth Initiative, the ultimate goal of the new HSTF Music Clubhouse Program is to empower youth as individuals and active community members through music.
The ideal candidate will be a skilled musician and educator with a proven track record in youth development programs in an urban setting. S/he will have demonstrated experience as a youth development professional and proven ability to relate to a culturally diverse group of teens and pre-teens as an instructor and mentor. Successful candidates will also be able to independently manage several projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-performance environment. Superior communication skills with youth and co-workers are essential.
The Music Clubhouse Manager is a full-time position with a competitive salary and opportunity for professional growth. Good benefits (health and dental). The expected schedule is 12-8, Monday - Friday (occasional mornings / weekend days required). Position reports to the Director of School-based and Cultural Programs and works closely with other youth development staff.
Key responsibilities:
Start-up:
- With Department Director, create/revise program curriculum with clearly-defined activities and realistic, measurable outcomes.
- With Department Director, evaluate space and resources and recommend necessary purchases / renovations / upgrades.
- Conduct outreach and recruitment within HSTF programs and broader community at outset of program year and throughout the year as necessary.
On-going:
- Lead weekly schedule of music instructional activities with small groups of youth ages 10-18, many with no previous musical experience.
- Program & supervise daily drop-in times.
- Serve as primary liaison with Berklee College of Music and work closely with Berklee staff to recruit and supervise Berklee work-study instructors and develop criteria to recruit and retain committed community volunteers.
- Meet with participant parents and provide them with opportunities to learn more about the program.
- Create and implement regular showcase opportunities for Music Clubhouse youth and coach youth to perform with confidence.
- With other HSTF youth program staff, integrate Music Clubhouse program and youth in HSTF annual signature events, including Evenings in Mozart Park summer family series and Annual Meeting.
- Identify core group of teens to serve as Music Clubhouse Youth Team (participants will receive advanced music and leadership training and serve as mentors to younger youth and peers).
- With Department Director, develop and implement participant evaluation to determine participant skills development and satisfaction with program.
- Work with HSTF Development Team to create compelling communications materials and develop program-specific donor development activities
- Other program-related duties as required.
Additional responsibilities:
- Attend weekly youth team meetings and bi-weekly staff meetings, and other meetings as necessary.
- Work with staff / Board / participants to plan and implement community events such as our Evening in Mozart Park, Three Kings' Day Celebration, Jamaica Plain World's Fair, and our Annual Meeting.
- Participate in in-house professional development activities.
Required qualifications:
- Advanced and proven understanding of music performance theory and pedagogy
- Ability to play at least one instrument at an advanced level
- Proven ability to teach entry level music (voice, keyboard, drums, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to utilize music technology and computers
- 1-3 years’ demonstrated youth development experience
- BA or equivalent
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadline
- Proven ability to work independently
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
