The community organizer is part of the Organizing team and reports to the Director of Community Development and Organizing. Main responsibilities include coordinating community organizing activities of teens and their families in the Hyde/Jackson Square area of Jamaica Plain/Roxbury.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Carrying out effective organizing campaigns on specific issues--this involves a cycle of outreach, strategy, action, and evaluation.
- Overseeing intensive training in community organizing and related issues for the organizing team.
- Through working with organizing team and receiving input from the local community, prioritizing issues important to youth and including these issues in an organizing work plan.
- Coordinating with Youth Team staff of the Hyde Square Task Force in activities that bring youth together.
- Coordinate activities to establish Mozart Park and Jefferson Field as thriving, dynamic open space that welcomes and celebrates all of the local immigrant and diverse cultures of the Hyde/Jackson Square neighborhood.
- Form a diverse committee of 20 residents, predominantly from immigrant populations (10 teens and 10 adults) to oversee planned renovations at Mozart Park and Jefferson Field, and plan programming for Fall, Spring, and Summer.
- Representing the Hyde Square Task Force at community meetings related to youth issues.
- Coordinating with other Hyde Square Task Force staff on other organization-wide projects and events.
Key qualifications include:
- 2 years experience in community organizing
- A team player with ability to interact and participate in a fast paced environment
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Superior organizational skills and overall attention to detail
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Goal oriented and proven ability to work independently
- Strong understanding with goals of community-based youth development programs
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point.
- Self-motivated.
